Balestrand is a charming tourist town on the north side of Sognefjord steeped in Norwegian tradition. Sognefjord is a region surrounded by tall majestic mountains with the wide and winding fjords reflecting below branching into smaller fjords as far as the eye can see. The landscape is dotted with charming small villages, cottages and farms along the smaller fjords.
The Balestrand landscape with the Nordic light that fills the night has long inspired artists who discovered this area in the 18th century. Many are drawn to this region to learn the history of and view the statue that pays homage to the world famous Icelandic saga of Fridtjov den Frøkne or Fridtjov the Bold. Many artists stayed in Balestrand building villas in the Swiss architectural style which are along the tourist trails in Balestrand.
